Monthly Review #38

Return of the sock bun!

Oh mannnnn when I wait over 4 days to wash my hair I can get it to stick into a sock bun with no pins or nothing. And everybody loves it. I want to get an even larger sock bun now! But first - don't know what a sock bun is? It's when one wraps their hair around a donut shaped foam/cloth object in order to achieve that smooth, radiating, ballet bun. The old school way to make one such object is to get a sock - preferably close to your hair color. Then cut the toe open so you can roll the sock into/around itself in a donut shape. You can buy a spongey thing for this in various hair colors. But I made my own. And I'll tell you a secret....mine's not a sock. I took an old pair of tights/leggings in brown very close to my hair color. I put one leg inside out inside the other leg, then rolled from the hip to the ankle (that way the crotch opening is tucked inside the full leg hole). This direction has another benefit: there is a distinctly more elastic (ankle) piece in the donut. Once I get that to the bottom it will hold onto my head a little better. But the real secret to getting it to hold without pins (aside from ultra oily hair) is starting the donut around the ends of the hair (pulling your ponytail straight up) and rolling over itself multiple times - then it's even hard to get it out at night - you don't simply pull it out; you must unwind it lovingly....But also your hair looks voluminous and fabulous after you extract it. At least, mine do. So I'd call this a great profession-day-to-wild-night style - if you have a place to stash your beloved donut before you go out. OR a great place to stash leggings if you need them later in the day. Or just a great style...you know...if you don't have hidden agendas.

I also was much better about braiding this month. Woo! Good work, me! It's surprising how many intricate, pretty styles you can make by pinning some small basic braids in shapes.

Monthy Review #37

So in May I went on a roadtrip and spend a night in Nashville. I washed my hair and it air-dried to perfection. (I have no pictures, I was on vacation)

I thought maybe it was my travel shampoo that was giving me such great hair. So I washed my hair at home with it...nope. same old same old. So I began to think maybe, just maybe, it was the water. So I looked up some water maps and found A LOT of conflicting information online. According to some maps NY was just "somewhat hard" and TN and MA (where I had such great hair in college) were in pristine soft water. In other maps it was exactly the opposite. In still others totally different. Seriously just google usa water hardness map - it's absurd. NYC is widely lauded as perfect hair water by many beauty sites and blogs. So for a while I hemmed and hawed. I thought about sending a water testing kit to my TN hotel - but it seemed like that was too big a risk for a hotel to take on my behalf. Finally I figured a relatively cheap way to test might be to buy a one time use pack of hard water hair treatment. If it did something I'd pursue this further...if not I'd throw my hands up. It totally worked. my hair was easier to wash, softer, shinier, voluminous, had deeper color. shit! So somehow even though my water provider's reports say our hardness is low my hair begs to differ. Huh. So now that it worked, the saga continues. Will I return to Nashville to snag a water reading? Will I have to buy a super expensive in-shower water softener? Or will I just up and move to Portland, OR where all the maps say the water is soft? stay tuned!

Monthly Review #36 - Measuring 3 Years!

Ah friends, it's been 3 years! So I know you want that measurement photos. The longest strands are at 21" (maintaining my growth rate of ~7" per year) but of course the bulk comes in around 19.5" accounting for hair fall and cycles always restarting. I did not straighten it this year so you'll notice the dramatic difference pulling it taught makes to the length.

I met up with a college friend with my hair flowing loose and crazy as it does these days (it's not only gotten longer but larger and more sticking-out-at-every-angle. I love it so much, as you can guess. But when she saw me she said "ah, this is the Alexandra I remember." This made me pretty touched inside that my hair is finally back toward my college hair standards (more on that next month). But also it's very funny because so many friends I've made since I shaved my head and moved to a new city continue to be startled by the length of my hair (upon prolonged gaps in our interactions). Because when they first met me I had almost no hair - so to them this mane is a totally new thing. But perhaps in a year or so they'll be saying "ah, this is the Alexandra I remember."

On that topic, yes I do still intend to shave my head again. And you know, make a wig for myself out of both heads of hair. As you do.

Anyway - pictures of this month. Not too many. Was out and about a lot. Summer is a busy time in the city.
