Monthly Review #38

Return of the sock bun!

Oh mannnnn when I wait over 4 days to wash my hair I can get it to stick into a sock bun with no pins or nothing. And everybody loves it. I want to get an even larger sock bun now! But first - don't know what a sock bun is? It's when one wraps their hair around a donut shaped foam/cloth object in order to achieve that smooth, radiating, ballet bun. The old school way to make one such object is to get a sock - preferably close to your hair color. Then cut the toe open so you can roll the sock into/around itself in a donut shape. You can buy a spongey thing for this in various hair colors. But I made my own. And I'll tell you a secret....mine's not a sock. I took an old pair of tights/leggings in brown very close to my hair color. I put one leg inside out inside the other leg, then rolled from the hip to the ankle (that way the crotch opening is tucked inside the full leg hole). This direction has another benefit: there is a distinctly more elastic (ankle) piece in the donut. Once I get that to the bottom it will hold onto my head a little better. But the real secret to getting it to hold without pins (aside from ultra oily hair) is starting the donut around the ends of the hair (pulling your ponytail straight up) and rolling over itself multiple times - then it's even hard to get it out at night - you don't simply pull it out; you must unwind it lovingly....But also your hair looks voluminous and fabulous after you extract it. At least, mine do. So I'd call this a great profession-day-to-wild-night style - if you have a place to stash your beloved donut before you go out. OR a great place to stash leggings if you need them later in the day. Or just a great style...you know...if you don't have hidden agendas.

I also was much better about braiding this month. Woo! Good work, me! It's surprising how many intricate, pretty styles you can make by pinning some small basic braids in shapes.
